Five Roads Worth Driving

Not the fastest roads, nor the most photographed. Five stretches of asphalt that reward a good car and an early start.

A great road is not a sequence of corners. It is a rhythm.

The best of them are quiet enough that you drive to the surface rather than to the traffic, and long enough that the car settles into a cadence. Almost all of them are better at six in the morning.

**Stelvio Pass, Italy.** Theatrical, crowded by ten, sublime before eight.

**Highway 1, Big Sur.** Not technical. Simply the most sustained view available from a driver's seat in North America.

**Col de Turini, France.** Rally history, narrow shoulders, and a surface that demands honesty about your own limits.

**Hakone Turnpike, Japan.** Perfectly maintained, precisely cambered, and culturally central to an entire generation of performance cars.

**Transfăgărășan, Romania.** Long, open, and empty in a way Western Europe no longer is.

None of these require a supercar. All of them are better in one you chose deliberately.
