Inside the Modern Collector Garage

The serious collection has stopped looking like a showroom. It looks like architecture with cars in it.

The first thing you notice in a considered private collection is how little there is to look at.

No banners. No tyre marks. No trophy wall. A polished slab, ivory walls, a single skylight, and perhaps six covered shapes arranged with the spacing of sculpture. The cars are not on display; they are at rest.

This is a shift in taste with practical roots. Climate control, low ultraviolet light, battery tenders, and hard floors preserve value. But it is also a shift in attitude. Collecting at this level has become an editorial act — choosing five cars and declining fifty.

The best collections we visit are not the largest. They are the ones where every car answers the same question in a different way.
